Stress and Adrenal Fatigue

Exhausted? Overwhelmed? Unable to cope?
Chronic stress and overwork combined with not enough self-care or rest can lead to a very common presentation of adrenal fatigue and burnout. Our adrenal glands are our primary “stress” glands that sit on top of our kidneys and release cortisol in response to stress. The adrenal glands rely on proper communication from the brain to regulate proper cortisol release, a complicated hormonal feedback system termed the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis (or HPA Axis). Both high and low cortisol levels are problematic and can lead to chronic health concerns.

Assessment includes a thorough intake of your symptoms, health history, stressors, and may include specific laboratory testing to rule out other causes of fatigue (there are many) and/or to evaluate your cortisol levels.

Symptoms of low cortisol

  • Morning fatigue
  • Lowered immunity, frequent infections
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
  • The inability to cope with stress
  • Low mood, depression, or anxiety

Symptoms of high cortisol

  • Trouble falling asleep and staying asleep
  • Feeling “wired but tired”
  • Changes in weight (especially around the abdomen)
  • Feelings of agitation, anxiousness, or overwhelm
  • High blood pressure and other cardiovascular risk factors

Treatment may include:

  • Investigation of the root cause of your concerns including blood work or saliva hormone testing
  • Addressing lifestyle habits that affect cortisol and stress hormones such as diet, sleep, and exercise
  • Specific nutraceuticals and herbals to improve energy while balancing your body’s stress response
  • Acute treatment as needed to provide relief from symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, or depression
  • The use of IV therapy to boost energy levels and quicken recovery
*Recovering from burnout or adrenal fatigue is not an overnight process. It is a complex physical and mental state that can include fatigue, anxiety, depression, insomnia, digestive upset, hormonal changes, and much more. A long-term comprehensive plan that addresses your whole self is the key to seeing lasting improvement.
